Addicted to mouth pleasure?

Is the oral pleasure of food an addiction for you?  Do you enjoy the exquisite delight of a piece of chocolate or salty chips but then have to keep going back for more and more? Have you become confused because pleasure quickly turns to pain?

Research suggests that the most pleasurable bite is the first bite and it’s downhill from there as each subsequent bite becomes less and less of a joy.  So why do we want more and more till we’re stuffed?

It’s like the 5-year-old in us has been let loose in the candy shop and she’s determined to eat as much as she can while she can, no matter what; like all you can eat dessert bars when you’re not paying – why would you hold back!!

In this child-like state we are not present to the consequences.  Like a kid, we eat till we have a stomach ache! We’re totally in the drama and don’t have the objectivity to choose yes or no.  We’re compelled and the consequences of our actions ie feeling fat and sluggish, have no influence over our choices.

In this child-like state we won’t be told not to have it.  If we are, then we just wait till the time is right (eg the partner goes to bed or we retreat to our room) and we do it anyway.  It’s like we’re having a little “tanty” in a grown up kind of way!  “You can’t tell me what to do.  Don’t judge me!  I want it and you can’t stop me!” This is part of the reason why so many people binge alone and possibly why so many women go into hiding of some kind or another when they have a food issue.  They become very isolated.

Most of my clients describe their non-hungry, comfort eating as a bit like temporary insanity!  They’re not present.  It seems very much a child-like state as instant gratification rules over delayed gratification.

So, what can you do about it?  Awareness is the first step.  Being able to “watch” yourself as you take the first Tim Tam, then the second one, then the third.  Observe without judgement.  Simple but not easy!

The next step is to delve into it.  How old are you at that moment?  What happened at that age?  What decisions did you make?  As you unravel this, your inner adult can reclaim power and therefore control.

Breaking through these barriers is one of the most liberating things you can experience in life. All kinds of new possibilities open up.  It is very exciting to experience and to watch!
