What is high functioning anxiety?

What is high functioning anxiety and what can I do about it?

When an individual has many anxiety related symptoms but may not require medication or ongoing therapy.  It’s when the individual is excellent at covering up their struggle through achievement, looking like they’ve got it all together and functioning at a high level (thank you to Life Coach Tammi Kirkness for this definition).

If it lasts longer than a very short time then it probably shouldn’t be ignored.

No symptom should every be ignored because symptoms are the wisdom of the soul trying to communicate through the body that something is not quite right.  If we don’t listen, things usually escalate!

Where to I start to address anxiety?

Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can…

I would add to this – Do what you know.  What do you know you could be doing to support your nervous system or emotional wellbeing that you aren’t currently doing (or doing properly!)?

Do you know you should be avoiding coffee but you’re still having 4 a day?  Do you know more magnesium foods in your diet would be helpful but you’re not organised enough?  Do you know a morning walk three times a week would really support your mental health but you’re full of excuses?

Knowing what to do and doing it, are two completely different things. The purpose in setting “Do what you know” as a priority is to become the person you need to be in order to achieve these things.  Becoming someone who is organised, self-disciplined, 100% committed, doesn’t listen to excuses or prioritises self-care is what is truly inspiring about working on your health.

So, to answer the original question – where do I start, start where you’re at and do one thing today that aligns with your goal to be calm and serene.
