Fibromyalgia, a syndrome of widespread muscle and joint pain accompanied with fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, depression, poor memory and poor attention, may be a result of vitamin D deficiency. Professor Michael Holick of the Endocrine Society in the US says “Vitamin D deficiency can cause a bone disease known as osteomalacia which is associated with symptoms that mimic fibromyalgia”. He goes on to say that many patients have a dramatic improvement in their symptoms when the deficiency is corrected. It is my opinion (and practice) that a thorough investigation of a patient’s nutritional status is indicated in all chronic conditions.
