Why use drugs when you can use kitchen medicine?

Why are we so reliant on medication for our health?  Why do we resort to something that gets rid of the symptoms but does nothing for the cause of our condition or for our long term health?

One of the reasons is that we’ve lost our connection with our kitchen!

Yes!  We’ve had decades of advertising teaching us that being in the kitchen is a waste of our valuable time.  You should “spend time with your family” and buy XYZ convenience food instead.

But I disagree.  Vehemently!  I think the greatest contribution a woman can have in the home is to TAKE CHARGE OF HER KITCHEN!  It is there you can create the magic of home medicine, of perfect nutrition, of soulful food, of memories, of weight control and preventive medicine. It is love, expressed!

The joy of having a well stocked kitchen from which you can create medicines for upset tummies, headaches, colds and flus, infections, constipation, diarrhea; not to mention nutrition that takes care of our long term health, is ASTOUNDING!  It makes one feel powerful and in control.  It makes one feel self-sufficient and independent.  It actually feels liberating to have your family’s health in your hands.

I love kitchen medicine!  Following are some simple ideas for everyday health complaints.  My resource page will have more and more recipes and ideas so check it out occasionally.  If you’re taking charge of your weight, remember that anything that improves your digestion, aids liver detoxification, reduces blood sugar levels, enhances thyroid function, etc will help you lose weight.

Apple Cider Vinegar

This wonderful, ancient remedy is a must for every kitchen. Use it in your salad dressings or make a refreshing lemon drink (download the recipe here).  Add a glug to your bone broths to help extract the nutrients. And it can be used for so much more…

Apple cider vinegar helps with:

  • Digestion and weight loss.
  • Indigestion
  • Getting rid of infections eg colds
  • Sleep
  • Lowering blood pressure
  • Balancing blood sugars
  • Alkalising the body
  • Reducing inflammation and acidity in the body
  • Arthritis

It can also be used for:

  • Wiping down benches
  • Rinsing your hair to make it shiny
  • Making your pet’s fur shiny (put it in their drinking water)
  • Deodorising the fridge

So you have a remedy for not only getting rid of colds and flus but also for replacing your cleaning and hair products!  You’ll save so much money!

Coconut Oil

I’ve been trialling coconut oil in my diet for some time now and it has been amazing.

A tablespoon added to smoothies, shakes, soups, etc adds a rich creaminess that is not only pleasurable but so, so good for you.  It helps keep your blood sugars lower and controls your appetite.  I’ve now noticed in myself and in my clients that if you increase your healthy fat intake, you eat and binge less and your appetite is better controlled.

Bone Broths

A staple for every kitchen. Once you get into the habit of making bone broths you’ll start to find multiple ways of using the broth in your cooking.

I’ve been giving it as a hot drink to my man when I know he’s hungry but he has to wait a while yet for dinner!  It nourishes and satisfies but doesn’t ruin his appetite.

And the health benefits! Oh my goodness.  Bone broths contain wonderful amino acids that help heal and seal the gut.  It’s great for kids and adults alike particularly those who are prone to allergies and food intolerances.  It helps improve immune function and mental wellbeing by closing a leaky gut.  If used in conjunction with the avoidance of gluten in people with leaky gut, it’s incredible how much a person’s health can improve.

Coming into winter, you’ll be making soups and stews again.  Why not make the base from your own home-made beef, lamb or chicken broth.  It adds incredible flavour and super nutrition.

Go to my resource page for the recipe.

To learn more and put all of this into practice, why don’t you come along to one of my workshops.  They are fantastic!  Click here to read more about the Ditch the Sugar workshop.
