Cardiovascular disease (CVD):

  • Affects 1 in every 6 Australians
    • 1 Australian dies every 10 minutes

Most common forms are:

      • Coronary heart disease (heart attack)
      • Stroke
      • Heart failure
  • Disability from CVD is severe
  • ½ the population over 25 has high cholesterol
  • 54% adults do not exercise & 60% are overweight
  • 30% over 25 have high blood pressure
  • 24% still smoke
  • Diabetes prevalence is increasing, currently over 1 million people
  • We have an aging population
  • Direct health system costs approx $11b / yr
  • Indirect costs are about the same
  • Risk factors:
    Smoking
    Inactivity
    Poor nutrition
    Alcohol excess
    High BP
    High cholesterol
    Overweight / diabetes
