Love your fat, it’s keeping you safe!

choc womanEvery wondered why your body defaults to a certain weight?  Ever thought about what unconsciously drives you to eat the way you do?

It’s the mind.  And it’s not your enemy!  Both your mind and your body are ALWAYS trying to help you.  Survival is programmed into it.  Knowing how to work with it will help you achieve your most comfortable weight.

Here are just 2 possible scenarios where you might struggle to lose weight:

  1.  You’re stressed, life is challenging, you’re skipping meals or eating the wrong things.  The body thinks that conditions are unfavourable, your cortisol levels increase and what you’ve effectively done is replicate a famine situation from our cave man days.  You’re body adapts by lowering your metabolism and holding onto fat stores.
  2. Something happened to you – your parents divorced, or you got divorced, somehow your sense of security got threatened and you felt unsafe.  Your unconscious desire is to feel safe.  You eat more than you need and you gain the extra padding as a buffer against the world (many women comment on how vulnerable they feel once they’ve lost a lot of weight!)  The weight hangs around because at some level you still feel unloved and unsafe.

The first step is to recognise what’s going on for you, acknowledge and observe it, without judgment.

Other things you can do are:

  • Breathe!  Breathing lowers cortisol levels and relaxes the body
  • Make friends with your mind. Learn to stop attacking yourself
  • Make a decision to stop doing what isn’t working and open yourself up to new possibilities
  • Get professional support.  The really long way of healing your relationship to food is going it alone.  It’s worth every cent to invest in getting help.
