Mental health and your weight

A patient came to see me recently suffering with a head cold.  While investigating her current life circumstances, she shared with me a whole lot of stuff going on in her life right now.  Her mother was sick and under medical care, her daughter was doing the HSC, her husband worked long hours and her business was stressing her out!  This kind of scenario, and variations on the theme, is not uncommon.  We all have stuff to deal with.  What interested this lady is how to keep her sense of self and her sanity while all of these things that were out of her control were happening.  The main thing for her was her weight.  She felt by taking charge of her eating she could take control of her life and get her power back.  Rather than being too busy to eat well, snacking on foods she didn’t really want and comforting herself with chocolate, she wanted to be able to step back and consciously and deliberately choose foods that would support her nutritional status, her immune system and her mental health!  Easier said than done of course, but in her first session, she got something for her head cold and the beginnings of a strategy for dealing with her weight and, indeed, her life!
