The biggest mistake older women make when managing their weight

Live life to the fullest!

When I say older women, I mean women 40 and over.

Is that you?

Have you heard the rumours that at the scary Menopause you’re going to stack the weight on?

Well, it’s true!

Unless you’re prepared…

Here’s a couple of facts for you regarding Menopause

  • Your metabolism drops once you are no longer cycling. This is pure biology. The menstrual cycle requires a lot of energy and once we are past that, your basal metabolic rate drops.
  • Menopause is a time of reckoning. Everything you’ve done to yourself up till then, helpful or unhelpful catches up with you. If you’ve been learning a bit about nutrition, watching what you eat, exercising when you can AND becoming more connected to yourself and your body, you will be fine.
  • You can’t eat the same after menopause that you did before. From a calorie perspective (as mentioned in point 1) you need to eat less even just to maintain your weight.
  • The biological and psychological stress of menopause is an endocrine challenge (the endocrine system includes all your hormone-secreting glands such as thyroid, pancreas, ovaries, adrenals, etc). That stress makes any underlying condition you have even worse. For example low thyroid function or poor blood sugar balance.

Meet Amanda and her Weight Release Story

A client, let’s call her Amanda, came to me because she’d gained, over 10 kilos over the last 2 years. She was in her late 40s (perimenopausal) but was still menstruating, so she was heading into even choppier waters!

We went through the usual naturopathic investigative phase of her treatment plan and found that she had blood sugar problems, a sluggish thyroid and “adrenal fatigue”.

More importantly, a life coaching assessment showed that much of her internal stress was due to a misalignment in herself about her work and an inability to communicate her own needs. This shows up big time at perimenopause when the protective veil of estrogen starts to withdraw.

To compensate for her internal misery she overate almost daily.

To compensate for her internal misery she overate almost daily and particularly before dinner when she got home from work. This distracted her but didn’t solve the problem.

We created a step-by-step plan for her which included coaching and naturopathic care. Almost immediately, she stopped the after work pig-outs and relaxed about her current situation. She is guaranteed to lose weight just with this insight and behavioural change.

The weight is slowly releasing and she’s still working on herself. It takes time, patience and gentle guidance to work through the layers.

Life is meant to be lived and your 50s are the best time to manifest your long sublimated dreams!!

What is the biggest mistake older women make when managing their weight?

There are 2 actually. One is failing to lower your food intake after you have stopped menstruating and the second is not getting help to deal with the challenges of midlife!

When to see a professional?

Not getting help for something as complex and important as your health is false economy. Being sick is REALLY expensive both emotionally and financially, not to mention how much money you can waste buying ineffective or incorrect supplements.

I recommend you start out first with the assistance of a naturopath who is trained to assist you with health and wellbeing in all areas of your life. Naturopath’s are like good real estate agents, we help you to find the right house for you as well as refer you to a good mortgage broker, insurance salesperson and decorator. In other words we help get you well and sort out the other areas of your life too.

Who am I?

I am a natural medicine expert specialising in menopause. I’m passionate about working with the new generation of women who are creating an empowering new paradigm for what mid-life looks like – women as powerful ambassadors for the wisdom of middle age.

I help women who want to transition gracefully through menopause and into the best years of their life to become the steady, calm woman who doesn’t get riled by anything and celebrates all of who she is.

Instead of struggling with weight gain, sleeplessness and chaotic emotions I support women through their amazing transition to reenergise and centre themselves so they can regain healthy weight, soothe their raging emotions and get a full night’s sleep every night. Then they can save the world!
